The Sixth Annual Gurmat Sangeet Darbar
August 21/22, 2010 in the Washington DC Area

The 2008 Gurmat Sangeet Darbar was held on August 21 & 22 at The Raj Khalsa Gurdwara Sahib in Sterling VA. Ptfofessor Ranjit Singh Ji, who runs the Bhai Mardana Academy in LA and has been teaching Gurmat Sangeet all his life, was honored for his lifelong contributions. Profesor Sahib studied vocal music with Sardar Sohan Singh of the Agra Khayal Gharana and the legendary Sikh Vyagyakar, Gian Singh Almast, who was a student of Pandit Vishnu Gigambar Paluskar of the Gwalior Khayal Gharana. He also studied Tabla with Ustand Bahdur Singh Ji and Jori Pakhwaj with Baba Nihal Singh Ji. The theme for this year's program was Dasam Bani.

The program was co-sposnsored by the Guru Angad Institute of Sikh Studies.

The program also featured Bibi Guneet Kaur from Toronto, The Raag Rattan Jatha from Maryland, Gagandeeep Singh, a up and coming Mandolin player from Oregon, Rattan Singh from Toronto, The Gurmat Sangeet Project Boston and numerous other young kirtaniye from near and far. Bhai Iqbal Hussain, whio hails from Karachi and is a part of the Rababi Kirtan tradition, provided stellar accompaniment on the violin to several of the kirtaniye.
